Who Is Selma Blair Ex-Husband? Inside Her Two-Year Marriage to Ahmet Zappa

Selma Blair’s only ex-husband is Ahmet Zappa, the musician, author, and son of late rock legend Frank Zappa. The couple married in January 2004 and divorced in November 2006 after two and a half years of marriage. They had no children together.

Zappa was born Ahmet Emuukha Rodan Zappa on May 15, 1974, in Los Angeles, California. He is a multi-hyphenate entertainer, working as a musician, New York Times best-selling author, screenwriter, producer, and music estate manager. He currently manages his father’s extensive music catalog through a partnership with Universal Music Group.

A Whirlwind Romance and a Star-Studded Wedding

Blair and Zappa dated for just six months before deciding to marry. The engagement was announced by Zappa himself on the social networking site Friendster on September 19, 2003, where he wrote, “I’m getting married…she said yes. I’m so happy. Love az.”

The couple tied the knot on January 24, 2004, in a traditional Jewish ceremony. The wedding was originally planned for the Ritz-Carlton in Marina Del Rey, but the location was changed at the last minute to the Beverly Hills mansion of actress Carrie Fisher.

Blair wore a white satin gown tailor-made by Karl Lagerfeld for the ceremony. Zappa wore a black suit. The guest list was small and included Zappa’s sister Moon Unit and his brother Dweezil, who attended with his then-girlfriend, singer Lisa Loeb.

For the reception, Blair changed into a black version of the same Lagerfeld dress. More than 70 guests danced to disco music and dined on grilled salmon and a three-layer coconut wedding cake. A friend of the couple told People magazine at the time, “The ceremony was so romantic, beautiful, elegant, a little goofy – exactly like them.”

The Divorce

Blair filed for divorce on June 21, 2006, in Los Angeles Superior Court, citing irreconcilable differences. At the time, a spokesperson for the couple released a statement to People: “Selma and Ahmet have decided to divorce but love each other very much and will continue to be close friends.”

The divorce was finalized on November 27, 2006. Neither party has spoken publicly about the specific reasons for the split beyond the cited irreconcilable differences.

Life After the Marriage

Zappa remarried on May 15, 2010, to Shana Muldoon. The couple has collaborated on creative projects, including the Disney book franchise “Star Darlings.”

Blair has not remarried. She has been open about her decision to never marry again. In a 2024 interview, she explained that motherhood, her career, and managing her multiple sclerosis make marriage impractical. “That’s why I would never want to get married,” she said. “It’s a major setup to fail.”

Blair later dated fashion designer Jason Bleick from 2010 to 2012, with whom she shares her son, Arthur Saint Bleick. She is currently in a relationship with businessman Andy Kiernan.
