Who Are Diddy Parents? Meet Melvin Earl Combs and Janice Combs

Sean “Diddy” Combs was born to Melvin Earl Combs and Janice Combs in November 1969 in Harlem, New York. His father died when he was just three years old, and he was raised primarily by his mother.

Melvin Earl Combs: The Father He Barely Knew

Melvin Combs was a drug dealer and hustler in Harlem during the 1960s and 1970s. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was described by friends as “energetic, athletic” with a flair for fashion.

Melvin was associated with Frank Lucas, the infamous Harlem drug lord portrayed by Denzel Washington in the 2007 film American Gangster. Lucas told Vlad TV that he and Melvin were “good friends” and “did a lot of business together.”

Melvin was shot and killed on January 26, 1972, at age 33, while sitting in his car on Central Park West. The shooting was reportedly a drug deal gone bad.

Janice Combs: The Mother Who Raised Him Alone

Janice Combs raised Diddy and his sister Keisha as a single mother after her husband’s death. She worked as a model and later as a teacher’s assistant.

Janice held three and even four jobs at times to provide for her children and put Diddy through private school. The family lived in Harlem and later Mount Vernon, New York.

In a 2006 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Diddy said his mother took on the role of both parents. “She almost killed herself to make sure I went to private schools, to expose me to travel,” he said.

The Truth About His Father’s Death

Janice initially told Diddy that his father died in a car accident. He only learned the truth when he was a student at Howard University, researching his father’s name in the library.

“When I typed in my father’s name and the day he died, I read in the Amsterdam News that he had been murdered in a drug deal gone bad,” Diddy said during a 2014 commencement speech. “Right there in that library, I realized there’s nothing greater than a mother’s love and desire to protect her child.”

Diddy publicly addressed his father’s life for the first time in 2013 on Revolt TV. “My father was a hustler. He was a drug dealer and he was a hustler, so I learned early in life that there’s only two ways out of that: dead-end jail,” he said. “It made me work even harder.”

Janice Combs Defends Her Son and Her Parenting

In December 2025, Janice Combs issued a statement disputing claims made in the Netflix docuseries Sean Combs: The Reckoning. The series alleged that she was an abusive parent and that Diddy once slapped her after the 1991 City College stampede.

“In the documentary, I am portrayed as an abusive parent. This is untrue,” Janice said. “I raised Sean with love and hard work, not abuse.”

She called the claim that Diddy slapped her “patently false” and said Kirk Burrowes, who made the allegation, was using the tragedy to pursue a failed claim to Bad Boy Records.

“Sean has been a dutiful son always ensuring that I was cared for and vigilantly managing my medical care,” she said. “I am requesting that these distortions, falsehoods and misleading statements be publicly retracted.”
